continuing It was time for another slumber party. That night, the three girls were not as close as they used to be. They seemed to have drifted apart. They stood around in silence, not knowing what to say. Seconds later, Ian entered the room with an overcast look on his beautiful face, breaking the still silence. Seeing him brightened up both Mel and Amber’s mood. Jamie, surprised by the change of mood, look around searching for Ian but he was nowhere to be found. Mel thought that Jamie was making fun of her so ignored her. Jamie got shocked upon seeing him right next to her. She too, was amazed by the hotness of Ian. ‘I’ve got something to tell you!’ Both Mel and Ian cried in unison. Laughing, Mel told Ian about her plan to catch a movie tomorrow night. Seeing that he did not have much of a response, she let Ian have his chance to talk. Catching her eye, Ian pulled Mel to the corner, he stared passionately into her eyes as if to search for an answer. Mel could see sadness and longing at the corners of his eyes. Holding both of her hands, Ian said, ‘ Mel, I’ve got a confession to make…please try to understand. I’m not who you think I am. I died fifty years ago during the war against Japan… I was then only a trainee soldier and I was sent to the front lines to fight. Not knowing how to fight, I ended up getting captured and tortured mercilessly until one day, I couldn’t take it anymore. I took a knife and stabbed it at my heart. I was unable unable to leave this world as I had died unhappy…so I came back to my old home…yes, this was my home fifty years ago…didn’t you ever wonder why I was unable to leave this house? Years passed…and I was still restless and unhappy…until Amber and her family moved in Amber and I became close friends and I confided in her my deepest secret. Amber had known all this while that I was a spirit. Barely here nor there. Then one day, you came over for a slumber party and I couldn’t take my eyes off you. Being with you were the happiest moments of my life and after life. I was no longer restless or unhappy as I had you. But now its time for me to go as I have found my happiness in life.’ Mel felt like her world was slipping away. Her world was no longer bright and colorful, it is grey and full of heartbreaks. Tears trickled at the back of her eyes, one by one the tears silently coursed down her pale cheeks. ‘Please do not leave! You have been the best thing that had ever happened to me. You have opened up my heart and showed me what true love is. What will I be without you?’ Mel cried. ‘I’m sorry, goodbye, my darling!’ they hands drifted apart. Seeing her best friend in such pain, Amber felt tears of shame prickling her eyes. She had never imagined love could be so deep. Just then, Ian disappeared into thin air in a blink of an eye. Mel dropped on her knees, swallowing hard trying to will herself not to cry. Amber and Jamie’s hearts went out for her, Mel was crying so hard that her shoulders were shaking. She felt as if her heart would break. She had been so blinded in love that any suspicion of Ian not leaving the house ever occurred to her before. Standing up, her knees shaking, Mel made a dash to the kitchen. Terrified at what Mel might do, Amber and Jamie went after her. There, under the dim light, stood Mel, eyes went with tears and a sharp knife in her hand. She felt lost without Ian. All she could think of at that moment was to be with him. Closing her eyes, she placed the knife on her wrist. ‘Sorry my friends, he just mean too much too me.’ With that, Mel took the knife and slashed it across her wrist. The last tear made its way down her cheek as pain pierced through her and she let out her last breath. Callings of her friends drifted further away and then everything was a blank. Is this what love is all about?
